UK retail sector - GDP

ended 13. July 2023

Britain’s economy shrank slightly in May, with GDP falling by -0.1% as the dominant services sector stagnated. How have things been for you as a retailer this year so far, and what are you expecting in the second half of the year?

May and June were particularly quiet for us at Smallkind. We stock ethical brands for all the family and even though sustainability seems to be more talked about now we’ve seen a big drop in sales during the cost of living crisis. Some of our brands have sadly closed this year and I suspect more will follow. I’m focusing on finishing off our new website and planning for the Christmas period but it’s hard not to worry about the future.
