Journalist: Hereward Mills, FT Adviser

New data has revealed that British interest in Spanish property has remained resilient - despite tax uncertainty.

Advisers - what would your advice be  to a client interested in moving to or purchasing a holiday home in Spain?

Keen to hear thoughts on Spanish property and the financial benefits of moving abroad in general.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

Interest in Spanish property staying resilient isn’t surprising, lifestyle value often outweighs short term tax noise. My advice to clients is to treat an overseas purchase as a financial strategy, not just an emotional decision.
Currency exposure, residency rules, inheritance tax, healthcare access and long term liquidity all need proper planning before committing. Spain can offer attractive lifestyle and cost of living advantages, but the financial benefit depends on structure and timing. Moving abroad works best when it’s integrated into a wider plan covering pensions, assets and tax efficiency. The goal isn’t simply buying a holiday home it’s protecting wealth while improving quality of life.
Cross border planning is where small mistakes become expensive, so professional advice is essential. The right structure can unlock flexibility and efficiency, but rushing decisions for lifestyle reasons alone can create avoidable long term costs.
Planning first, lifestyle second.
