Social media and the destabilisation of the state

Looking for academics in political sociology, media and economics to contribute to a national newspaper article to run later this week. Amid the ongoing clash between Elon Musk and Keir Starmer (and more recently Nigel Farage), and Musk's support of the AfD in Germany, to what extent, in your view, do highly politicised social media platforms such as X have the ability to destabilise or transform established political structures and institutions — and perhaps reshape democracy and/or the state in its current form (or at the very least our perception of it)? Are legacy politicians and the establishment parties/power structures underestimating the power of social media platforms like X to subvert through their engagement, virality and reach? Could the exponential growth of social media be a precursor of a new era of direct democracy in Western economies — or other, more sinister, political systems and ideologies?
