Sitting ducks if someone gets sick

ended 08. July 2025

Looking for examples of clients you have worked with (anonymous of course) where they have had zero (or negligible) protection in place in the event that they get sick or fall ill for a few months or longer, despite countless overheads and monthly costs. Doing this because we spotted this post on LinkedIn by a protection expert and we're going to put together an article on clients you have arranged protection for who were utterly exposed and highly leveraged financially, without knowing it. The more egregious the exposure, the better. Again, we do not expect real names, just examples - and the solutions you provided.

It’s not just the breadwinner who needs protection. Even in my own situation, despite being the main earner and having significant cover in place for myself, I realised I’d overlooked protection for my partner when she had a health scare—which thankfully turned out to be a false alarm—but it really drove home how vulnerable we were. If she’d fallen seriously ill, I’d have needed to take time off work for hospital visits, childcare, and running the household. As soon as we got the all-clear, I increased her cover.

My advice is simple: don’t wait for a scare to force you into action. Most people are far more exposed financially than they realise. Protection isn’t just for the breadwinner—it’s about safeguarding the whole family’s financial position and lifestyle.
