Hi! I am seeking people who have increased their salary by negotiating with their employer, taking on additional responsibilities, stepping into a more senior role, leveraging a competing job offer, switching companies for better pay, relocating or using another approach. Ideally, sources can share their salary before and after, what they did to secure the increase and when this happened.

I joined Rowley Turton in 1997, aged 23, earning around £8,000–£9,000 a year. Nominally a trainee IFA, I was more like an office junior or trainee administrator, but because it was a tiny firm, I saw almost every aspect of the business.

I progressed through trainee and paraplanner roles to financial adviser, before becoming a director in 2003. Along the way, and since, I have negotiated pay rises by demonstrating increasing value: gaining qualifications, developing expertise, taking on more responsibility and making a greater contribution.

My philosophy is simple: employees need to create value. In the private sector, that may mean making or saving the business money, or making colleagues' lives easier; in the public or charitable sectors, it may mean improving outcomes, saving time or money, or delivering a better service.

The stronger your evidence that your contribution has grown, the stronger your case for higher pay.

Almost 30 years later, I'm still here working with Alan.
