The government knew these figures were coming to have reacted by setting out policies to strict exactly the skilled people and students we need. These figures are high due to one off events like the war in Ukraine and the clamp down of democracy in Hong Kong. The government should be explaining these figures, not using them as a way to stoke xenophobia.
