Poorest see incomes drop twice as much as richest

This morning, the Office for National Statistics published data showing income for the poorest fifth of the population decreased by 2.0% between 2020 and 2021 to £14,600, while median income for the richest fifth of people  also decreased, but to a lesser extent, with a decrease of 1.0% between 2020 and 2021 to £62,700. In short, the poorer people in society saw their incomes drop double that of the richest. If you've got any thoughts on this, send them across ASAP.

Seeing the poorest fifth of the population suffering a decrease in income in these uncertain and challenging times highlights just how unfair the increasing inequality we face in the UK is. When you realise it is double the drop of the richest fifth, it's shocking, but at the same time the 1% of the richest fifth won't be having anything like the financial wellbeing challenges that the rest of the population are currently juggling. If this inequity continues to increase, the country is going to find itself in an increasingly difficult place as unfairness and desperation can fuel changes in attitudes and behaviours.
