ONS: more adults living with their parents

The ONS published a report this morning showing that more adults are living with their parents. Key points below. Any thoughts, send them across ASAP.

  • The number of families in England and Wales with adult children living with their parents rose 13.6% between the 2011 Census and Census 2021 to nearly 3.8 million.
  • In 2021, around 1 in every 4.5 families (22.4%) had an adult child, up from around 1 in 5 (21.2%) in 2011.
  • The total number of adult children living with their parents increased 14.7% in the same period from around 4.2 million in the 2011 Census to around 4.9 million in Census 2021.

We see this quite a lot with first-time buyers. It's sometimes even the case that they had been renting somewhere previously but have now moved back home to live with their parents to make bigger strides toward saving a deposit for their own home. With the launch of Skipton's 100% mortgage product, and perhaps other lenders who follow suit, this may be less of a necessity going forward.

I don't personally see that the price of properties is the reason for more people still living with their parents into even their 40s when there is the excellent Shared Ownership arrangements in place in the UK for both new and resale homes. Unless of course, people feel they are too posh to dare live with the great unwashed of Housing Association tenants that is and in that case they deserve the situation that they are putting themselves in. We have over the past 30 years seen many clients come through this system, sell up their shared property and end up in the property of their dreams with tens of thousands of equity having been built up as deposit.
