ended 30. March 2023

A journalist at Moneyweek is writing a piece about investing in the gas industry and would like comment from investment experts.

  • Is this a good sector to invest in right now, and why?
  • If someone wants to invest in the gas industry, which companies/funds are worth looking at, and why?

Oil and gas companies make up a large portion of the FTSE100 because they are money-printing machines. Despite the oil price going negative during the pandemic, oil and gas companies are back at record highs, paying juicy dividends. Some may write off these giants as companies of the past, but they are the biggest investors in green energy too and will be vital in our transition away from the fossil fuels that produce their profits at present. Shell is the darling stock of the sector, but for a more diversified option go for Blackrock Energy and Resources Income Trust. A cheaper diversified option is the iShares Oil and Gas exploration ETF.
