Mail Online - Psychologist to talk about social media trends

ended 31. March 2023

Femail is looking for an expert to comment on the trend of lockdown nostalgia that is spreading on TikTok - with people sharing clips they filmed or saw on the app during the lockdown of 2020, commenting on how it was the best period to be on the app and that they miss it.

They need an expert to explain why some people would regret this era and how it might be because of the sense of community they built online, or perhaps the fact that they struggled with facing the 'real' world after the pandemic and are yearning after this period of time where they were interacting with the world from the safety of their room.

For some, the pandemic was a break for the hectic pace of daily life and an opportunity to rest and regroup. No commuting, dressing up or networking, no running to client meetings or from social event to social event. As frightening as it was, many found it was a chance to breathe. As online groups and communities emerged, we also found ourselves connecting with people we might never normally speak to and people were seemingly much for open to reaching out beyond their usual social circle.

As we left lockdown, we were essentially promised a "new normal" but we've largely gone back to our old normal. Many of us are back commuting and in the office, over filling our diaries with both work and social events. We have lost the bravery of reaching out to strangers and are far less likely to join online groups now that real life is an option. All of this means we are once again back in a cycle that can quickly lead to burnout and/or social isolation.
