This morning at 09:30, the Office for National Statistics published an annual report about the number of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) in England. It was very positive. Key takeaways below.

  • The not in education, employment or training (NEET) rate decreased for the overall 16-24 age group at the end of 2021 to 10.5%, the lowest in the series. This decrease is statistically significant meaning we are confident that it has fallen in the latest year. 
  • The fall is driven by a decrease in the NEET rate for those of post-compulsory education age 18-24 to 12.6%, the lowest in the series. The proportion of 18-24 year olds not in education or training is also the lowest in the series at 49.8%, meaning the highest proportion of this older age group are reported as participating in education and training since this series began.
  • The NEET rate for the younger 16-17 group, who have been required to participate in education or training since 2013 legislation, has remained fairly stable in the latest year and is again one of the lowest in the series at 3.0%, with just 4.3% not in education or training (NET).

"This encouraging data shows that UK businesses and the Government generally are moving in the right direction. But there's still a lot to do. To solve the NEET problem once and for all, we need businesses rather than the government to take the lead in connecting and engaging with the workforce of tomorrow. There are plenty of really good government-backed training scenes and providers out there right now and they are clearly starting to have an impact, but we could still do better to get the information about these opportunities into the hands of the youngsters who most need it. There are still many structural and organisational deficiencies that we need to overcome to help young people into training and work."
