In order of priority-
1- do you have enough cash on hand for emergencies? This can be anything from the boiler breaking down to you losing your job. Having six months of expenses is a good start- more if you work in a volatile business sector.
2- are you and your family protected in case you can't work anymore or you die? Get life cover for the mortgage at the very least separately and see if any insurances from work cover any other shortfalls.
3 are you planning a major purchase in the next three years? like a deposit on a house or a new car? Best to reserve this amount in cash,
4 -are you maxing out your pension contributions so that you receive your maximum employer contributions? This is free money don't overlook this
5 Are you on a high standard variable rate on your mortgage? Check to see if you can save money by shopping around.
6. Do you have surplus income? Try saving a slightly uncomfortable amount into your S&S ISA on a regular basis automatically.
