Hello everyone,

I'm writing a guide for the Telegraph on how to write the perfect cover letter and I'm after some pointers please.

I'd like to cover:

  • What is a cover letter?
  • How do I write a good cover letter?
  • How to structure your cover letter?
  • Dos and don'ts for writing your cover letter
  • And if anyone has an example/template they are willing to share with credit, then please send to imogentewnews@gmail.com

Thank you so much in advance,

Imogen

Cover letters are a way for you to demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm for the role advertised. A personal touch that in my experience is well received.

Cover letters also give you a great opportunity to cover off an objection that might come on reading your CV.

Fro example if you are changing the direction of your career, are relocating, have particular experience in an area highlighted on the advert/job description.

Forget everything you have ever heard about Cover Letters.

Creativity is key. Setting yourself apart from all other candidates is key. Most importantly, keeping it succinct & concise, with a clear focus on the value you will add to the business, instead of rehashing your CV.

I once wrote a cover letter from the POV of my child to a pizza brand. So think more along those lines and less along 'I have X years experience'.
