HMRC property transaction data

Journalist: Frances Ivens, Telegraph

ended 28. April 2023

Residential property transactions are up 26% in March compared to February - on a non-seasonablly adjusted basis. Does this mean that buyers have accepted current mortgage rates are the new norm and some confidence is coming back to the market?

Do you expect transactions to pick up throughout the year? Are any buyers still waiting for a further drop in mortgage rates or house prices?

We've definitely seen an uptick in business in the last month or so compared to the start of the year.

Throughout that period, there's been a steady stream of remortgage business, and we're starting to see more purchases once again.

We've probably seen clients being a bit more hesitant than usual to make a decision, perhaps influenced by them wanting to see more stability in mortgage pricing but this hesitancy seems to be shifting.
