Greggs outage - your thoughts

ended 20. March 2024

The Mail Online are looking for some reaction from payments and IT experts regarding the Greggs IT outage today. It will add them to this story. Obviously this follows the McDonald's, Sainsbury's and Tesco issues over the past week, too. Why does there appear to be a domino effect in outages at the moment? Are all companies vulnerable to them and what can they do to prevent them? And what could the financial cost be to Greggs?

It is unlikely that Greggs' own software is the issue here. We, as consumers, are so used to payments working seamlessly but, in reality, a simple tap at the point of sale involves a complex chain of systems and third party providers that need to all work together. Many of these systems aren’t as reliable and modern as they claim, and when one of the providers goes down, the whole chain stops. Companies need to take great care when choosing providers and building their syatems. The price for not doing the type of negative publicity that we have seen recently and erosion of customer trust.
