Prolonged periods of holding urine can cause bladder muscle weakness and problems emptying the bladder in the long term. You don’t get UTIs holding wee but bacteria is more likely to grow in your Urinary tract if voiding is avoided over prolonged periods, especially in pregnant women, men with prostate problems, people with kidney disease or neurogenic bladder. So try and empty your bladder every 3-4 hours. If you keep holding your wee you may go into urinary retention (inability to urinate ) which can get quite uncomfortable.

Hold on a minute, I need to pee:
Passing urine and opening your bowels are routine bodily functions necessary to remove waste products from the body.
The urinary system comprises the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra in that order.
Generally speaking normal frequency of emptying your bladder varies from 4-8x/day.
It is not advisable to hold onto your urine for too long for a few reasons
1. It could cause bladder muscle weakness – leading to incontinence
2. May increase the chance of urinary tract infections.
3. Can precipitate or worsen kidney disease.
4. Allows toxic substances to build up in the kidneys.
5. Not good if you’re pregnant.
6. Detrimental for those with prostate problems
Sometimes you may be taught to hold your urine as training for an overactvie bladder this is medically supervised
