Facebook hiring 10k people in EU to build Metaverse

A blog post by Nick Clegg (remember him?) over at Facebook yesterday said it's about to hire 10k people across the EU (feel the snub there?) to help build the Metaverse. Three Qs:

  1. What the hell is the Metaverse?
  2. Should Facebook focus on avoiding outages (think recent Insta outage) before it tries to blend reality and virtual reality? 
  3. Is humanity doomed to a Zuck-created droid-like life?

What is the metaverse? Answers on the back of Nick Cleggs’ fag packet please. One thing is for sure, Facebook knows how to sniff out a money-spinner like a pig snuffling for truffles. In its simplest form, the metaverse is where virtual and augmented reality collide. Think wearing glasses as you walk around Trafalgar Square which let you see virtual battles taking place or listen to AC/DC as they straddle the Landseer Lions. The genius part? You’ll have to pay for that. In fact anything can be bought and sold if it is digitised in the metaverse. It’s not the outages that scare me, but the statement that Facebook will uphold ‘values like free expression, privacy, transparency and the rights of individuals into the day-to-day workings of the internet’. Clearly they haven’t got that right yet, so what hope do we have in a virtual and augmented reality world? Last thing I want to see is a naked Nick Clegg on top of Nelsons Column.
