Express is keen on stories on Cash ISAs and pensions - any intel or stories?

ended 27. June 2025

We had a meeting with the Express and they said they are interested in stories on themes such as Cash ISAs, pensions, and advice for older people. We will have a direct line to feed them regular stories, so any good lines or quotes will be featured in the Express. Any strong ideas I can then send out a proper alert.

  • Do you have any intel or stories about changes in Cash ISAs or any advice that people can use?
  • Do you have any intel or stories about changes in pensions or any advice that people can use?
  • Any other stories about older (over 50 or 60-years-old for example) people and what they should do with their money before they retire? Any advice or warnings.

Responses by 8am tomorrow, thanks.

How Much Cash Should You Keep for Retirement?

Too many of us confuse the certainty of cash with safety. With inflation still stubbornly high and life expectancy meaning many of us will live well into our eighties, hoarding too much cash in our fifties or sixties could actually be dangerous.

Retirees often ask how much cash they should hold for security. I usually suggest keeping no more than 12 to 24 months of essential spending in cash to cover emergencies or market dips. Anything beyond that should be working harder, perhaps in investments that can keep pace with inflation. Holding too much cash feels safe, but it’s quietly losing value every day.

Remember, this is your last chance to really take advantage of pensions and any employer contributions to maximise your retirement income, especially once the kids are off your hands and the mortgage is repaid, leaving more to put away.

Be under no illusion, that Cash ISA tax-free wrapper is just some lipstick on a pig while inflation is running so rampant, turning your hard-earned savings into a slowly deflating soufflé. Treating your ISA provider with loyalty is financial masochism at its worst. You should should ditch them and move as soon as a better rate appears. Diarise and fix it TODAY, not tomorrow. As for old pensions, that labyrinthine mess cobbled together by successive chancellors, "pension freedoms" just means the freedom to blow the lot before your bus pass even arrives. Consolidate and interrogate any old pensions gathering dust (and probably being nibbled away by fees). And for pity's sake, if an unsolicited call promises to "unlock" your pension, it’s your wallet they’re aiming to unlock. Here are some tips If you are over 50 - verify your State Pension (don’t trust, verify!) now, decimate any debt you have built before you hang up your boots and if your house is bigger than your needs, flog it.
