Evening Standard - Mental health expert comment needed

ended 16. May 2023

An Evening Standard journalist is looking for really brief comment from mental health experts to answer any of the following:

- What should people bear in mind when looking for a suitable psychotherapist?
- Can an AI psychotherapist be helpful? What would you say to anyone considering exploring engaging the services of an AI therapist?
- Is it more important than ever to be discerning about what media we consume when we are struggling with mental health issues - eg podcasts, books, social media etc?

There's a very tight deadline on this, if you can respond asap.

As the role of AI is very much in its infancy, an AI psychotherapist is very unlikely to provide the empathy, sense of safety and expertise required to overcome emotional challenges for the foreseeable future. However, psychotherapists that utilise AI to educate, improve administrative efficeincy and provide data-backed interventions as part of their overall service will soon become standard practice.

The most important factor in successful Psychotherapy is the relationship you have with the Psychotherapist. If you think that you can build a therapeutic relationship with a robot - you need Pscyhotherapy! Seriously though, rapport and relationship is the overriding factor in successful Psychotherapy - and research evidence agrees.
