Daily Mirror - Psychologist comment - Is mess good for us?

ended 13. February 2023

Daily Mirror is looking for a psychologist to explain the ways in which having a messy home may actually be good for us...perhaps helping us let go of perfection, or showing we're feeling creative etc.

Whilst generally speaking we tend to feel better with a clean and orderly home it is important that we are able to tolerate mess. When we don't have the distress tolerance to manage to leave the dishwasher or to not vacuum straight away, it can be a sign of anxiety disorders such as Obsessive-compulsive disorder, (OCD). Interestingly people with ADHD often report that they feel much better when things are ordered and calm but that they don't seem to be able to get things looking that way. When we realise that cleanliness and aseptic living conditions aren't always as healthy as they may seem, we are freed up to live more mindfully and joyfully in the present. Similarly, if we're able to get 'lost in the moment' when we play with our kids, rather than worrying about 'the mess' then wonderful things can happen for us and them.
