Daily Mail - Elon Musk has predicted superhuman AI by next year - could it happen?

ended 17. April 2024

A Daily Mail journailst is looking for an AI expert to outline a scenario in which Elon Musk's prediction could come true (ideally with a speculative timeline) - The journo doesn't mind if it's then qualified with how unlikely it is, but he needs an imagined scenario in which it COULD happen then go into detail.

The journalist needs either written comment or a short phone interview.

Elon Musk’s prediction of superhuman AI next year highlights our race towards AGI amidst serious challenges like chip shortages and power supply constraints. These issues are critical as they could slow progress. Yet, the pursuit of AGI is relentless, promising revolutionary advancements in technology from chip design, fusion technology to supercomputers. Theoretically, achieving superhuman AI is possible; practically, it’s the real-world constraints like power that pose the biggest hurdles. This is a rapidly advancing field, with enormous venture capital influx in the last 24 months pushing us closer to a breakthrough. AGI is the ultimate goal and it’s not a matter of if, but when. As we navigate this path, the potential benefits are immense, but so are the risks, including the feared “Terminator-like” scenarios. It’s a thrilling yet precarious journey as we unlock capabilities once deemed futuristic.
