Cambridge Building Society announces support for homelessness

The Cambridge Building Society is helping Cambridge and District Citizens Advice (CDCA) support vulnerable people at risk of homelessness, as the charity faces increasing demand for its services.

Applications are now open and can be made twice a year via the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.

Earlier this year, CDCA was awarded £7,500 from The Cambridge Building Society Community Fund to support its Homelessness Prevention Project.  

The grant contributes towards staffing costs, enabling the charity to provide more face-to-face advice and early intervention for people facing eviction or housing insecurity.

The support comes at a time when the charity is dealing with growing numbers of individuals and families at crisis point – including those already facing eviction, in rent arrears, or rough sleeping – and those on the verge of losing their homes.

This sounds a fantastic initative. Money is still a taboo subject for many and so easily accessible help is very welcome. I helped set up a citizens advice bureau hub in my local church for the same reasons. The more help we can make available, the stronger our communities will be. That benefits everyone.

It’s disappointing to hear that the charity is experiencing more and more people on the edge of homelessness, but with rates higher for longer and the cost of living significantly higher than pre-Ukraine war, it’s not surprise. As a building society, it’s great to see them trying to make a difference to something relevant to their industry, and something members will find quite emotive.
