Businesses choosing not to use AI image generators to talk about why

ended 16. May 2023

A journalist at the New Scientist is writing a story looking at the use of AI image generators like Midjourney, DALL-E etc.

He would like to hear from a business that has made a conscious decision not to use these text-to-image tools and the reasons why.

Text-to-image is still only forming at this stage, especially for any types of images that are realistic in style. Many businesses need to depict something that is photorealistic, for which a lot of AI generators for images are not up to the job.

Using AI for more abstract illustrative styles can produce some better results but then there is a problem with maintaining brand consistency of style. Since AI relearns from what is already in the public domain, there are potential intellectual property rights issues too. Source material used by AI to generate images may end up infringing copyrighted material which would cause legal complications.

AI still has a way to go before it becomes viable for businesses to adopt in a more widespread fashion. For now, it will remain a novelty on this front.

With the organisations I have been advising the conversation has been around text based creation and data quality. Right now while the image generation is excellent from the likes of Midjourney and DALL-E there seems to be some hesitance in using the services for anything that would come under public scrutiny.

Brands are not wanting to risk any brand reputation to tools they don't have full control over, especially where the brand image is concerned. Editing text from ChatGPT is far easier than image manipulation. Right now the collaboration of AI and human interaction is still paramount.

I do think there are lots of companies watching from the wings about image quality but also the legal ramifications of using generated image and video content.
