Business social media and fraud

Journalist: Anna Sagar, Mortgage Solutions / Specialist Lending Solutions

ended 16. August 2022

Looking to speak to mortgage brokers who use Facebook and other social media platforms to promote their business about whether they have had any experience of fraud where someone takes your logo, posts and so on and impersonates your business.

  1. What happened and how did you find out?
  2. What did you do and what was the response from the platform?
  3. What would your advice be to businesses or people wanting to use social media to promote themselves on how to keep safe?

We're fortunate that it hasn't happened to us yet but we probably get one spam review a week for some dodgy forex or crypto scam with a Nigerian prince's email address. We always report them but until you talk to a human being, Facebook will do precisely nothing. This is the same as Google, who have been particularly unhelpful with around 100 genuine 5-star reviews being removed in the past year. It's just impossible to talk to someone who can rectify a genuine problem. That sums up the issue in that social media is the great marketing opportunity of our time but to police it the tech giants use algorithms and computers with really mixed effects, catching out and penalising genuine people but letting rogue actors who know how to play the system off the hook.
