Brokers - are you getting enough support on Consumer Duty?

Journalist: John Fitzsimons, Freelance

Morning team

Last week Paradigm launched a new hub full of content to support brokers meeting the Consumer Duty rules (https://www.mortgagesolutions.co.uk/news/2023/05/05/paradigm-expands-consumer-duty-broker-support/).

There have been plenty of clubs, networks and the like launching similar measures in recent months.

But is it enough? Are brokers getting enough help from mortgage firms in meeting the new requirements?

Are there areas where sufficient support is not being provided, any holes in the help?

And how comfortable do you feel in your own Consumer Duty preparations?

There is a huge volume of Consumer Duty support, with networks helping to get their AR's into the right place. For those that are DA's the support is there, but maybe not as easily accessible or obvious, many mortgage clubs are setting up hubs and CD pages on their websites. The Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI) also has some very detailed, informative and useful CD help guides on its site, for those firms that are members and are well worth a look too. The help is out there, but it is help that you need to go and actively find, especially if you are a DA and don't have a network pushing you to get up to speed with the changes.

Speaking from a Directly Authorised firm we have just completed our 20th webinar on the subject - so yes there is plenty of support out there. The best of these is from Paradigm who have the skill set to come at this from a totally different, and much needed, angle. Sadly I am still seeing a lot of advisers quoting "it's not for me to worry about, it's for the bigger players" and sadly these guys are going to at some stage come down to earth with a bump. Consumer Duty is for every part of the advice process from one-man bands to multi-billion lending banks. We have used this opportunity to reprogram ourselves to think more as clients and have created so far some innovative tools and aids to bring more to the party for our clients - we've not taken this as yet another task but a chance to sweep clean some old ways of thinking.
