Nestlé Waters  becomes one of the first companies in the UK to use thermo-electric technology to remove Japanese Knotweed from site near Buxton.

Japanese Knotweed has been found at the Cowdale Quarry, a site owned by Nestlé Waters and managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.

However, removing the plant which grows so fast in a wide variety of soil types and can quickly spread from underground roots can be tricky and conventional methods could pollute the water source.

The site is being managed in line with Nestlé Waters’ water stewardship strategy, designed to care for water, promote biodiversity, and help create positive water impact. All land management practices are chemical-free, including removing Japanese Knotweed from the site.

“Eradicating the knotweed will have a positive impact on biodiversity, allowing native species to thrive on the land.

Japanese knotweed may go dormant in the colder months November to February, but it doesn't make this invasive perennial any less problematic for homeowners.&nbsp; Research by Japanese Knotweed Agency reveals that it is officially the UK's "most troublesome plant" all year round, but what does it look like during autumn? Japanese knotweed grows vigorously between spring and autumn before dying down to the ground in winter. This problematic weed is much harder to spot as it enters its dormant period, especially when it has been cut back, but there are a few crucial signs to look out for right now, according to experts.&nbsp; The team at Japanese Knotweed Agency noted the importance of "keeping an eye out" for invasive growth on your property in autumn to identify it "early on" and be in with the best chance of tackling it effectively. What does Japanese knotweed look like in autumn? In its peak season, Japanese knotweed can grow 20cm per day, up to 4 metres tall as its been seen in 2023. This nuisance weed can infiltrate both concrete and bricks, posing a significant threat to the stability of property, and causing a significant devaluation.&nbsp; There is only one noticeable difference in its appearance at this time of year, according to the team at Japanese Knotweed Agency. As summer turns to autumn, Japanese knotweed changes only slightly as the flowers are in full bloom usually until October. When the knotweed begins to wilt, the leaves turn yellow and the stems become dark brown as the weed starts to enter dormancy. Until this happens, the best way to identify it is to look for the heart-shaped leaves, creamy white flowers and zig-zagging growth patterns. According to JKWA, the widespread growth continues to fade from green to brown until winter, when the leaves fall off completely. As the most invasive weed found in the UK, Japanese knotweed requires specialist treatment to remove and could land you a large fine of up to £5,000 if you fail to get this done. Section 14 of the Wildlife &amp; Countryside Act 1981 states: "If any person plants or otherwise cause to grow in the wild any plant which is included in part Two of schedule Nine, he shall be guilty of offence.” This means that if you let Japanese knotweed spread to private land, such as your neighbour’s garden, you could be responsible for the compensation and any legal fees incurred in addition to the removal costs. For this reason, it is crucial to keep an eye out for the first signs of an infestation at all times of the year, and seek immediate professional advice. Identifying Japanese knotweed early on is essential in tackling it effectively and will also save you money not having to fight a major infestation. When it comes to removing weeds from your property, attempts at doing it yourself should be avoided at all costs. The specialists explained that amateur removal will typically only "make matters worse" due to the vigorous nature of the plant. Even the smallest remnant of Japanese knotweed can be the start of a whole new plant, as rhizomes left over in the soil can reproduce and create a new infestation. Its ability to grow in almost any climate is what makes this weed so troublesome for homeowners, renters and gardeners alike. According to Japanese Knotweed Agency, the weed can continue to grow during its dormant phase too. Even in winter, when the knotweed remains dormant above ground, below ground the roots are still present and may continue to grow. On the soil surface, the plant will die off until the following spring when new shoots appear, and the knotweed now has a big store of energy to send the roots further afield and knotweed mayhem starts. Fehmina Kader, Client Liaison Manager at Japanese Knotweed Agency said “We are the first in the UK to offer thermo-electric eradication services to actually kill off knotweed once and for all, whereas chemical treatments typically only control the knotweed meaning it needs the constant application of chemicals several times a year ongoing.” “Thermo-electric delivery 5000 volts to the knotweed, sending the high voltage throughout the weed and its extensive roots and rhizome and boiling it inside out and damaging the cell structure at the core leaving it extremely damaged and with several visits the knotweed should be destroyed and decomposes in the ground and will be gone forever, without chemicals” “Treatment is viable all year round, but the best time to attack the weed is when it is using all of its energy in the flowing season and again in the Spring when it exerts a lot of energy to bring about its new growth for the year.” Japanese Knotweed will not go away on its own, given the extensive roots may travel in any direction from the rhizome up to 7 metres and 3 metres deep, it is almost impossible to identify all of the root system and apply effective treatment . &nbsp;<blockquote>thermo-electric eradication is set to change the way the UK deals with invasive weeds</blockquote>
