Through the past decade, the number of people using mobile devices to access the internet has skyrocketed. In fact, now people consume 2x the amount of content on mobile than they do on desktop. Businesses and website owners should be excited about this in 2021 as the opportunity to reach and engage mobile users is still is growing.&nbsp; There are several effective ways to go “mobile-first” and create a mobile experience that really meets the expectations of modern users. Firstly, there’s a responsive web design, which creates a mobile-friendly web experience that is frankly the bare minimum. Native mobile apps are built for a specific platform, such as iOS for the Apple iPhone or Android for a Samsung device. They are downloaded and installed via an app store and have access to system resources, such as GPS and the camera function. Mobile apps live and run on the device itself. Snapchat, Instagram, Google Maps, and Facebook Messenger are some examples of popular mobile apps. Web apps, on the other hand, are accessed via the internet browser and will adapt to whichever device you’re viewing them on. They are not native to a particular system and don’t need to be downloaded or installed. Due to their responsive nature, they do indeed look and function a lot like mobile apps — and this is where the confusion arises. Now we know the fundamental differences between mobile and web apps, we can recap the pros and cons of each: Native mobile apps Pros: - Faster than web apps - Greater functionality as they have access to system resources - More control over what the end-user can see and access - Can work offline - Safer and more secure — native apps must first be approved by the app store and are less harder for mid-level hackers to access - Easier to build due to the availability of developer tools, interface elements, and SDKs - Can use to pro-actively sell rather than reactively. Cons: - More expensive to build than web apps - Compatibility with different platforms (i.e. iOS and Android) usually means designing and building the app from scratch - It may prove difficult to get a native app approved by the app store Web apps Pros: - Do not need to be downloaded or installed — web apps function in-browser - Easy to maintain — they have a common codebase regardless of mobile platform - Will update themselves - Quicker and easier to build than mobile apps - Do not require app store approval, so can be launched quickly Cons: - Do not work offline - Slower than mobile apps, and less advanced in terms of features - Not as discoverable as mobile apps as they are not listed in a specific database, such as the app store - Quality and security is not always guaranteed — web apps don’t need to be approved by the app store - Reactive rather than proactive and has less functionality. &nbsp;<blockquote>'In fact, now people consume 2x the amount of content on mobile than they do on desktop. Web Apps Vs Native Apps

Taking a look at how to keep the numbers ticking over. by Henry Dewing on March 2021 With lockdown 3.0 easing (UK) there is a glimmer of hope about businesses getting their teams back together into the office. Perhaps not all teams are necessary for a team/office environment (for those hoping to work from home forever) but one team where it is certainly necessary, is the sales team. When you work in sales there are no two ways about it, you need to have others around you to go through the highs and lows, someone to talk to and learn from, a manager to encourage and motivate you, a beer at the end of a Thursday to take the edge off the week and ease into the weekend... Oh, the Thursday beers! You might wonder where I am going with this, perhaps I just wanted to reminisce. Alongside focusing on employee happiness with all of the yoga and wellness zoom calls, team calls, end of day calls - how can the wider company keep sales ticking over by doing very little? Especially when their sales teams are at home, probably distracted and likely to be quite unmotivated. After all, (most) salespeople have big egos and the need for attention which being in an office helps. It’s okay, for me to say this - been there and done it, frankly, I can say I still am in sales so don’t be too upset. There are also endless excuses at the moment; the economy, they’re not in the office, they’ve furloughed half of their staff, everybody is holding onto the budget, I think I’ve got Corona (don’t recommend this one), etc. Investing in technology has really stood out for businesses throughout the last year and one way of doing so is through their own sales and ordering app. So how could your own sales/ordering app help improve your numbers? 1. Staying connected with customers. Staying connected with customers is a constant battle and usually takes up a lot of time and resources, especially in a way that’s going to encourage them to engage. Being able to notify your customers of new products, a flash sale, or a promotion is a free and easy way to keep customers up to date and keep your business at the front of their minds when it comes to needing something. Allow your customers to carry you around in their pockets 24/7. 2. Selling overstocked products. There are multiple occasions when big retailers place a huge order only for the last minute to say they only need half of what they originally ordered leaving you with lots of stock left over. The usual process then is for sales reps to call up every other customer/reseller to see if they want it, this again takes time and resources. If you could send a notification to a group of accounts quickly notifying them of this sudden influx of stock (SALE ON 2000kg of ____) wouldn’t that make your life easier? Give your sales reps some time back to be actively selling other products or creating new inroads with new businesses. 3. Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity. Much like my mind, keep it simple. If you are at the forefront of changing an industry and you are really embracing the “customer experience” era then make the whole buying process easy for your customer. Create a simple and user-friendly app for them to see everything that you have to offer. Let your customers order what they want or accept your (pushed) promotion in three clicks or less. Just look at Amazon, their buying process is simple and fast. In a world where convenience and simplicity are key surely this makes sense?! Give your customers some time back. In conclusion, having your own sales and ordering app is another string to the never-ending bow. It shows that you are innovative, that you’re investing and committed to the future, investing in your customers, and that you are aware of the changing of the guard to the modern millennial at the helm of a family-run business. Of course, I am biased but this comes from a number of years within the technology/software industry and seeing with my own eyes that everything is moving in a digital direction and my main piece of advice would be to get involved early.

How could an app improve sales?

With the prevailing immensity of smartphone usage, a lot of businesses have their mobile apps now and should have one. And if businesses choose to 'go digital', they need to be clear and analytical about it. In a recent GoodFirms survey, the participating firms were asked questions on two different, but decision-making data sets - Costs and Time - for roughly 80% of their projects. Under the section of Costs, the firms were asked to provide hourly rates to develop a mobile application based on the type of project (economic project &amp; high-end project), and for platforms (iOS, Android, &amp; Cross-Platform). From the data collected, the type-based average hourly costs were calculated for app platforms and different geographies. Under the section of Time, the firms were asked to provide the minimum and the maximum number of hours they usually require to complete a specified development stage or a set of app features. From the data collected, the hour ranges with the median minimum and the median maximum were calculated, along with the highest maximums for certain, required cases. KEY TAKEAWAY: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO DEVELOP AN APP? Simple calculating with the time taken and average hourly charges (£45) resulted from the survey, the average app development costs would be: A simple app costs about £18,000 to £43,000 with minimum viable features. A complex app costs from £25,000 to £65,000, with popular consumer features. An advanced app costs about £45,000 to £100,000, with cutting-edge features. Of course, these are estimated calculations. And there are many moving parts in the development process. Each of these variables is discussed and accounted for through the following app development cost breakdown. KEY TAKEAWAY: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DEVELOP AN APP? Each of the stages in the development process takes different amounts of time to complete. It usually takes weeks - a ton of brainstorming, to-and-fro communications, development cycles, tests - to build the finished mobile app. Simple calculations from the survey figures reveal that the average app development time could be: Making a simple app takes about 4.5 to 11 weeks, with minimum viable features. Making a complex app takes 7 to 16 weeks, with popular consumer features. Making an advanced app takes 11.5 to 26 weeks, with cutting-edge features. The raw figures from the survey were in hours and converted into weeks. For this, standard practices are considered - simultaneous work on 2 development stages at a time and working time of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. So there you have it, of course, the numbers are estimated and can change but this can help with managing your or your board's expectations. The initial cost can look expensive but you are investing into your customers, the future and if you build the right app then the return on investment can be much greater. Advice would be to use a third-party company rather than 'build in-house' because you'll save on time and money (other salaries) and it's what they do on a day to day basis and also take your time choosing the right developers, make sure that you can have a lasting relationship with them.
