UK tourism to Spain ‘could collapse’ amid new scheme ‘adding fifth to price’

I am the owner of Brown Paper Packages and Bébé Spa. I began my side hustle 8 years ago when my husband was made redundant just before Christmas. I started with some small wooden personalised items and visited a few Christmas fairs in the area, it was all last minute with only 6 weeks until the big day. I was over the moon with the £1000 profit I could put towards my children's gifts. When I saw how well the page was doing I decided to carry on and introduce personalised toy boxes, these were a hit and became our main source of side hustle income for the next 6 years and supported my two periods of extended maternity leave.

In November 2019 we decided to venture out into children's parties, something I had always wanted to do. Up take was slow and by February we had only booked 5 parties, then COVID hit. Thinking that was the end of it we shelved the idea. Little did we know there would be a huge demand for a children's party that could be delivered to the door for the host to set up themselves. The business exploded and we were doing up to 20 parties a week. We expanded to bell tents, big cinema screens, soft play parties, afternoon tea boxes and bouncy castles. 

Throughout the pandemic I was a key worker so with the business to manage too, it meant working 70hrs a week whilst people were enjoying the sun in furlough. But it was all worth it. 

The business has meant I can give up my full time job as a Building Society Branch Manager to focus on my four children. I have now also been able to set up a sister company offering baby massage with a spa experience which is regularly selling out.
