Tuesday was an afternoon of firsts for me: ✳ My first visit to The National Robotarium at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh ✳ The first time that I have been at a talk by someone who has been in space (Anousheh Ansari, a former International Space Station astronaut) ✳ The first time that I have shaken hands with a robot (thank you Kacper Rozanski and Rich Walker from Shadow Robot) I got a glimpse of the future when I visited the National Robotarium for the CENSIS "Robotics, AI and pushing the frontiers of human potential" event. While I was there, I also visited our Accountech client Crover's new office for the first time since they relocated there (still a few boxes to unpack). Crover have a robot whose first application is to move through solid grain to monitor conditions within grain silos. It works in any environment made of bulk solids and powers, like sand dunes, heaps of grain, mineral bulks, chemical powders or even one day, perhaps, loose Martian terrain. They are the second tech company moving into the Robotarium after Touchlab who helped host the event, who have a robotic product which mimics human skin - another client of ours, Bioliberty will be the third when they move in this week. They have a robotic glove to assist sufferers of hand weakness such as those recovering from strokes. Xiaoyan Ma from Danu Robotics, another exciting Accountech client who are making great progress were also exhibiting at the event. They are developing a robotic arm which uses artificial intelligence to sort different types of waste at recycling centres, a monotonous and unpleasant task for human operators.&nbsp; I think that I may be spending quite a lot of time at the National Robotarium soon. The talks from Zaki Hussein from TouchLab, Anousheh Ansari from XPrize and Sethu Vijayakumar, the founding director of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics, were all both fascinating and inspirational. Used properly, these technologies could solve a lot of our current problems and attending talks like these certainly gives you a more positive outlook for the future which contrasts the doom and gloom sometimes reported in the news. When I started my business as an accountant for tech companies, over 20 years ago, the advances made since in the internet and mobile phones would have seemed impossible. I am glad that I am still young enough to see the next "revolution" and potentially exponential change that is happening in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics now and that we at Accountech, as accountants specialised in early stage technology companies, are able to work with and help Scottish tech companies such as these which are at the forefront of it. The National Robotarium is a great resource for facilitating that. On my way out of the building, as I walked to the car park, a group of school children were outside and one of them stopped me and said “Excuse me, what do they do in there?”.
